Edward Hammond Hargraves (1816-1891), gold rush publicist,
was born on 7 October 1816 at Gosport, Hampshire, England, son of Lieutenant
John Edward Hargraves and his wife Elizabeth Whitcombe. Educated at Brighton
Grammar School and Lewes, he went to sea at 14 and arrived at Sydney in 1832.
